Anchored VWAP swing trading
Also known as Brian Shannon / AlphaTrends. Swing trades over days or weeks in liquid stocks with a fresh anchor such as earnings, news or a key high. The trend should agree across timeframes.
Brian Shannon at AlphaTrends teaches anchored VWAP: average price since a meaningful event, such as earnings, a breakout or a 52-week high. Traders look for a rising anchor in a liquid stock, daily and intraday charts pointing the same way, and a pullback that holds the anchor before volume returns.
How the setup works
A regular VWAP starts over every morning. An anchored VWAP starts at a moment you choose, such as an earnings gap, a breakout or a 52-week high, and averages every trade since. It shows the average price everyone who bought since that event has paid. Above it, those buyers are in profit and tend to defend it. Below it, they are trapped and may sell into rallies.
The trade is usually a pullback. A stock in an uptrend dips to a rising anchored VWAP and holds it, and volume comes back as it turns up. Traders also watch for a reclaim: price that was below the anchor gets back above it and stays there. The stop goes below the anchor, which gives the trade a clear line.
Scans to try
- AVWAP is a scan filter here. Anchors at earnings, quarter open, year open and the 52-week high. "Above a rising AVWAP from earnings" is a condition, not chart work you redo per symbol.

Up On Newshelps find stocks with recent news to check as possible anchors. - Every chart carries a session VWAP, and the RS columns tell you if the name is leading or just riding the tape.
A ZenBot workflow
- Pick your anchor. ZenBot's AVWAP filters anchor at earnings, the quarter open, the year open and the 52-week high.
- Combine "above AVWAP" with
Strong Dailyto keep names in a daily uptrend. - Check timeframe agreement with
All Clear. - Look for pullbacks toward the anchor rather than stocks already far above it.
- Save the scan and alert on it, so you hear when a name reaches the level instead of watching charts all day.
What to watch for
Anchors only matter if the event mattered. An anchor from a quiet day carries little weight. Price often wicks through an anchor before holding it, so many traders wait for a close back above it rather than buying the first touch.
